How Moms Like Us Can Manage Stress

For the past two years, I’ve been juggling two jobs, sometimes three, and doing chores at home since we usually don’t have a helper. That’s in the middle of waking up at dawn to prepare the kid’s lunch for school and do other stuff.

Being a mom is a rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it can also be incredibly stressful. Juggling multiple responsibilities and constantly putting others’ needs before your own can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being. However, moms must prioritize self-care and find effective ways to manage stress. In this blog, I’ll explore nine simple strategies that I do, which can also help other moms navigate the challenges of motherhood while maintaining their sanity.

1. Watch K-Drama

Sometimes, all you need is an escape from reality. Watching Korean dramas can transport you to a different world filled with captivating storylines and endearing characters. It’s a great way to unwind and relax after a long day. Dive into the world of romance, comedy, or suspense, and let the captivating narratives take your mind off stress and worries. Recently, I have immensely enjoyed the following:

2. Eat good food

Food has a remarkable ability to comfort and nourish us. As a mom, it’s essential to take the time to prepare and enjoy good food. Experiment with new recipes or indulge in your favorite comfort foods. I rarely cook now, so eating out has been constant almost weekly Treat yourself to a delicious meal or snack that brings you joy. Remember, taking care of your taste buds can be a delightful form of self-care.

3. Mindfulness and Meditation

Practicing mindfulness and meditation can work wonders for managing stress. Take a few moments each day to focus on your breath, clear your mind, and be fully present in the moment. Engaging in mindfulness exercises can help reduce anxiety, improve concentration, and enhance overall well-being. Consider using guided meditation apps or attending mindfulness classes to deepen your practice. I do this at night when I find it difficult to sleep. I listen to Headspace: A Guide to Meditation on Netflix. The most effective strategy for me is counting backward from 1000 to 1. But I honestly only reach 950, and I have dozed off.

4. Wash dishes in silence

Although it may seem mundane, washing dishes can become a therapeutic activity. Instead of rushing through this chore, try doing it in silence. Pay attention to the water on your hands, the sound of running water, and the scrubbing rhythm. This simple act of mindfulness can turn a mundane task into a moment of calm and reflection.

5. General cleaning on weekends

A cluttered environment can contribute to feelings of stress and overwhelm. Set aside some time on weekends for general cleaning and organizing. Decluttering your living space can create a sense of order and promote a peaceful atmosphere. Involve your family members in the process, turning it into a bonding activity while teaching children the importance of cleanliness and responsibility.

6. Reward yourself with a treat

As moms, we often forget to reward ourselves for our hard work and dedication. Take a moment to acknowledge your accomplishments and treat yourself. It could be something as simple as enjoying a piece of chocolate, buying a new outfit, or pampering yourself with a spa day. Rewarding yourself reinforces the idea that you deserve recognition and self-care. Logging in at Shopee or watching TkTok Live selling is therapeutic for me, but not for my wallet, lol.

7. Use essential oils

Essential oils have been used for centuries to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Incorporate them into your daily routine by using a diffuser or applying them topically. Lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang are known for their calming properties, while citrus scents like lemon and orange can uplift your mood. Experiment with different essential oils to find the ones that resonate with you. I especially love WowHappy essential oils, particularly the Sleep and Stress Free variants

8. Reading a book

Honestly, I’ve been having difficulties reading because of the condition of my eyes. Holding a book and turning the pages with one arm is tough, but I still try.

Reading can transport you to different places and offer an escape from daily pressures. Whether fiction, self-help, or a biography, find a genre that appeals to you and carve out time each day to read. It’s a beautiful way to relax, expand your knowledge, and find solace in the pages of a good book.

9. Get a massage

At least every two weeks, I get a massage at home. Ate Anna visits me and does her magic each time. Nuff said.

Final Thoughts

Managing stress as a mom is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in life. By incorporating these activities, moms can find effective ways to alleviate stress and prioritize their well-being. Remember, self-care is not selfish—it’s essential for being the best mom you can be.
