Fool Me Once: Another Signature Coben Mind-Bender

Spoiler alert – if you haven’t watched Fool Me Once yet, be warned there are spoilers ahead!

I decided to check out this limited series after I saw it on my friend Kheen’s Facebook post. I’m a fan of Harlan Coben‘s work – I’ve seen a few of his other TV adaptations like Safe ( because of Michael Hall ), The Stranger, and Stay Close, but I haven’t actually read any of his books. His stories always keep me guessing with so many twists and turns that sometimes make my head spin!

Fool Me Once follows Maya (Michelle Keegan), a woman whose husband, Joe (Richard Armitage), is killed in an apparent street robbery. But as the story unfolds, Maya starts to uncover disturbing secrets about Joe’s hidden past.

I have to say, the climax shocked me. I never imagined Joe would be capable of killing Maya’s sister! Although, given his shady history, I guess he was willing to do whatever it took to cover his tracks.

Joe’s mother, played chillingly by Joanna Lumley, was a real piece of work, too. The lengths she went to in order to protect her children from facing consequences for their actions were truly appalling. She lied, manipulated people, and enabled her sons’ awful behavior. What a nightmare of a human being!

In the end, Maya ingeniously live-streamed Joe’s mom spilling details about the real family history – that was a very sly way to reveal their web of secrets finally. Maya was pretty badass, fighting back after everything Joe and his family put her through. Even though she had to die in the process, she made sure that after she passed, everything would be in order for her daughter.

I like the angle on Detective Sam Kierce. Many might find it unnecessary, but it added a layer of intrigue to the series.

As always with Harlan Coben’s stories, Fool Me Once kept me hooked, even when I was shaking my head at all the twists. Overall, I’d give this limited series a thumbs up. It has motivated me to go back and review more of Coben’s TV shows soon. His intricate plots definitely leave you with lots to unpack!
