As we navigate through our 40s, birthdays often feel overshadowed. Loved ones become preoccupied, distances grow, or sometimes, it feels as though people simply forget. Perhaps it’s my increasing detachment from the whirlwind of daily life that has made me feel somewhat invisible.
In an era where social media is ever-present, it’s easy to mistake a glance at a picture for a genuine connection. The digital world gives the illusion of closeness, even if real-life distances remain vast. A simple “hello” means the world to me, yet often, I find myself being the initiator. I get it—life’s hectic pace can make reaching out seem like an enormous task.
But this year was different. This year was special. My dear friend Pia, amidst her bustling life, took a detour to visit me. While there might have been other reasons for her journey, the effort she made to see me is something I deeply cherish.
I could have started this post raving about the unique bond high school friends share. Yet, it’s essential to highlight the depth of my gratitude towards Pia.
After a trip to Seoul, Pia, who knew she was close to the Philippines, made the extra journey to see me. We reunited at Trinoma, just days before my birthday, sharing a warm meal at Ramen Nagi. Her brother JM, whom I remember as a tiny tot, joined us. Post-dinner, we relished our coffee at Starbucks, reminiscing and weaving new memories. My family, eager to meet this incredible friend of mine, joined in the celebration. Pia, hailing from the distant Oahu, Hawaii, proved that miles can’t diminish true friendship.
High school remains an unforgettable chapter of my life. It’s not just about the memories but the connections that stay, standing the test of time.
Pia, my heartfelt thanks for the moments you shared. You’re living proof that enduring friendships genuinely exist.
