Maria Clara At Ibarra

Chai Fonacier made me do it.

I just finished watching Nocebo and searched for something new on Netflix. I saw that Maria Clara at Ibarra is at the top spot, so I checked out the trailer. It was the scene where Chai met Klay and I got hooked, and as they say, the rest is history.

The historical series for me was totally unexpected. First and foremost, I never liked anything from GMA except News and Public Affairs, Eat Bulaga, Bubble Gang, and Aldub, lol. Honestly, I find their artists a tad too bland (sorry!) and when it comes to acting, they just fall short. Before Netflix and other streaming sites, our TV was always on ABS CBN. ABS CBN shows for me were better in terms of quality and execution. But how I was wrong!

I absolutely adore Barbie Forteza‘s portrayal of Klay.

She exudes a captivating charm and cuteness and also showcases exceptional acting prowess. But, for me, a true revelation was Julie Anne San Jose’s role as Maria Clara. When she cries, I cry harder and her naivete transported me back to the old days like I was living in it. I never knew she could act, I thought she was just a singer.

The historical series held on the Top 1 spot for 22 consecutive days! It aired on April 14, 2023. And today, after 52 days, it still on Top 7!

I love that the series refreshed my mind of Jose Rizal’s work, because honestly, I forgot the story already. I only remembered some of the characters , but what exactly happened on the novel is something I don’t remember anymore.

It’s great that today’s kids can be acquainted of Rizal’s work. Because, with all the digital distractions we have, it can be quite an effort to educate them.

The series is engaging, and there are no dull moments. The set was grand, elaborate and impressive and the cinematography is truly excellent, you can quickly tell that it’s an expensive project.

Overall, I love it, and would watch it again. And I look forward to watching Barbie again on screen soon!
